Thank you so much, Zenobia! I did something similar - left a full-time job as communications director to be able to spend more time with my family and work part-time as a freelance writer, graphic designer and photographer - and I've never regretted it! Thanks for the encouraging words!

I concur. It's heart-warming to read this encouragement from a parent, your children are very lucky to have you. I let go of a promising career in teaching (ok, so not the best paying, but certainly stable) to be a writer, and couldn't be happier with my decision. I hope your children find what truly makes them happy (whether that be an artist, a doctor, or something in between).

You're welcome, Josh. It's just a small thing in comparison to all he did for me and my family, immediate and extended, let alone the rest of the community and all of those he knew. He was an amazing example of love (and taking life with a dose of humor!), and you're right: We all lost a father when he passed. Missing him already. Looking forward to seeing him on the other side (loved that part of your story in the eulogy). :-)

Thank you for this wonderful tribute to my dad. You hit the nail on the head. His love knew no boundaries. Some of my earliest memories from childhood were of him doing what seemed effortless on his part.. Showing up at the right time and place to 'be Christs love' for people who needed it. He had an amazing intuition for what people needed spiritually. And he delivered 24/7.
He celebrated births and baptisms. And he mourned death and loss. He had a larger family than those of us related by blood. He was truly a member of every family in his congregation. He cheered at the happy times. And he cried during the sad times.
His depth and sincerity were matched by no one.
It has been a blessing to call him dad. But I know that, deep down, we all lost a father when he passed.

Absolutely, Jennifer. We were blessed!

I talked with your mom and dad a little at the service, and it sounds like all is well with you! Glad to hear that!

Thanks for commenting. :-)

Wonderful sentiments. The pictures and your words really capture my experiences with Father John as well. He was loved by many, but more importantly her shared his love with so many people in the community we were all so lucky to have been a part of his church.

The joys of being a child! For all the above reasons the "letter to your children" is so important, because as they get older and less responsive to you, you will be less likely to write to them in the same way. Nice blog.
